M.J. Popplewell is retired after a career working in publishing as commissioning editor for the history and politics of the Middle East. Her interest in Israel began in the early 1970s as a volunteer on Kibbutz Misgav Am. Afterwards she studied Hebrew and Arabic at the University of Jerusalem.
